A solution to the specific problem you described:
If you put your grocery list in date view and move everything to someday, then it won't be marked for today's task. You can also rearrange tasks in your ALL list, and that arrangement will stay the same in the widget. Just drag and drop.
If you want red text for the widget, star the tasks you want red in the app. Starring makes tasks HIGH PRIORITY, which is personally most useful in priority view.
I have my ALL list in priority view, which makes it the view in the widget, and all my groceries are at the bottom, but if I wanted date view my groceries would still be at the bottom, since they're under someday, which is always at the bottom.
You can literally organize the widget via the ALL list anyway you want in terms of location and stars.
I still like the idea of choosing which list is the widget, since ALL list is the only option but I don't mind it, how I organized mine is perfect for me (and it sounds like it would be for you too except in date view, since that's what you're currently using).

To Any.do :
I like that a shopping cart pops up when I have task that starts with "buy" but it doesn't always show up. I would rather put an in emoji myself, but they all turn to question marks. This seems like the easiest solution because you guys won't have to create more icons and then program them to automatically appear, plus users will be able to personalize a lot more on their own. Many people are very visual and pictures, color coding, etc. are very useful for us to be productive (I personally have ADD and colors and other visuals are almost the only way I can legitimately focus on what to do, and it makes looking at my long list of tasks non-stress inducing, and I feel less overwhelmed and confident and willing to take them on).
Same.
I don't understand how no one on the team thought of simply having ALL be a default option too...
